I like to teach people how to dance! not just one side close, ie In a waltz for example a close change.
The man leads with a heel, and dances onto a toe (Like walking) If he slides his foot forward 'usually to avoid standing on his partner feet', he is just putting the brakes on! His posture is wrong therefore his balance is incorrect. If the man leads through a heel between the partners feet his posture/balance is correct therefore he is dancing with his partner. Dancing is about enjoying yourself, not about learning hundreds of steps and not able to dance them properly ie basic steps done correctly, ie balance/ posture/ sway, far out way dancers who are swamped with hundreds of steps and wondering what step to use next?
